Bream

Abramis brama

The bream has a tall body with a rather pronounced dorsal hump behind the head. When young they have a silvery color, but when they mature they become darker. It differs from white bream by having a protractile mouth and more than 50 scales on the lateral line.

Its size usually ranges from 30 and 50 cm in length. Longevity is high, they can live more than twenty years. They are gregarious fish, which prefer stagnant water or the lower reaches of large rivers. They breed in the spring.

The diet of adults is made up of insect larvae, crustaceans, mollusks, algae and plants.

Bream is naturally distributed in rivers and lakes in most of Europe and Russia. It is introduced into the Muga basin.

It is a medium-sized species, rarely exceeds 25 cm. The body is tall and compressed laterally. The base of the pectoral and pelvic fins is orange, and the anal fin is very long.

It lives in stagnant or slow flowing waters, mainly reservoirs or lower stretches of rivers. It is an omnivorous species that feeds on invertebrates and plants.

It is native to most of Europe, and has been introduced to Catalonia since 2003. It is currently expanding and is located in several reservoirs in the Ebro basin.
