It is a medium-sized fish, in general adults measure from 20 to 25 cm. The body is flat, oval in shape, with the eyes in the right corner of the body. They have a brownish color with small spots of different shades, which maintains its presence unnoticed when they rest on the bottom.

It is distributed along the coastal areas of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. In Catalonia it is located at the mouths of the main rivers.

They are migratory fish that breed in the sea and enter the estuaries of rivers and coastal lagoons to feed.. They prefer sandy bottoms where they live half-buried. The diet consists of invertebrates and small fish.

It is an increasingly rare species, and although there is not much information, should be considered an endangered species.
